Heron Foods Smashes Fundraising Target for Macmillan Cancer Support

Heron Foods has today announced it has raised a staggering £239,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support over their year long partnership, through numerous fundraising initiatives.

Heron Foods launched Macmillan as their charity partner in September 2015 by taking part in the cancer charity’s flagship event, World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Stores across the country went green for Macmillan, with cakes of all shapes and sizes being eaten and sold for donations. The launch was a massive success, raising over £30,000 in just one day!

Throughout December 2015, Heron were massive supporters of the Christmas appeal, Text Santa, for which Macmillan was one of three beneficiaries. We sold pin badges, got warm and woolly for Christmas Jumper Day, and created our own Wishing Tree poster in stores for customers to leave a message of love, hope or remembrance in return for a donation.

We then went on to deliver a packed calendar of fundraising activities throughout 2016 to raise a huge amount of money to help people affected by cancer. Stores scheduled Bag Packing and Round It Up initiatives every couple of months, which are always popular with customers.

In February, we delivered ‘Februhairy’ - when staff were encouraged to come into work with a striking new ‘do’ – styled, dyed or cut.

Spring was all about flowers. In May, our customers took part in our ’Blooming aMAYzing May Day’ in-store competition to win loads of great prizes.

In July, our ‘Heron Heroes’ assembled to do something Marvel-lous by donning their favourite capes and tights and dressing up as their favourite superheroes.

During the summer holidays, we launched our ‘Life’s a Beach’ children’s colouring competition. We received over 1,000 entries, with the eventual winner walking away with £100 worth of vouchers (and their parent a full Heron Saver Card). There were also loads of other in-store games and a foreign coins collection to coincide with the end of our customers’ foreign holidays.

Then along came Ted, our loveable teddy, who got up to loads of mischief on a tour of more than 20 of our stores. In the three weeks ‘Ted on Tour’ was on the road, he witnessed our stores organising teddy bear picnics, balloon popping, guessing the weight of his porridge and selfies with customers in exchange for donations!

At our Store Support Centre HQ in Melton, near Hull, each department hosted a different charity event over an 8-week period. Stock and cake sales, guess the baby competition, in-house race day, tombolas and auctions all contributed to raise more than £4,250!

As the summer warmed up, then came walks, runs and cycle challenges galore! Our dedicated teams from across the country ran the Hull 10K, took on the Mount Snowden Midnight Walk Challenge, withstood the ’Hell on the Humber’ 48-mile relay team to name just a few!

In September, our three business apprentices organised a fundraising ball at a hotel in our heartland of Hull with a 3-course meal, disco, raffle and awards ceremony. The event raised a terrific £1,000!

Then came the ‘Mega Challenge’ - HQ to HQ! Four team members endured a whopping 220 mile bike ride from Macmillan HQ in London to Heron Foods SSC in Melton. To add to this challenge, Regional Manager, Craig Antrobus then decided to run the Great North Run and walk the 3 Yorkshire peaks twice, over the course of three consecutive weekends! Together with Craig’s Herculean efforts and the HQ to HQ Challenge in late September, we raised an incredible £2,450!

“We’d also like to thank two suppliers in particular, both of whom donated 1p per sale – Allied Bakeries, through the sale of their bread, and Sofidel UK, through the sale of Nicky Elite Kitchen Towels, who helped us raise a combined total of over £13,400.”
